A coffee from San José de Lourdes, San Ignacio

In the hamlet of Nazareth de la Cumbre—located in the San José de Lourdes district of San Ignacio, Cajamarca—Franklin Peña and his family grow coffee at 1,800 meters above sea level. Their journey began in 2021, born out of the challenges of the pandemic.

Finca La Familia started with just six people: Franklin, his parents, and his siblings. Together, they decided to renew their coffee plots and commit to a alternative way of producing coffee—one focused entirely on quality and the true potential of their land.

The decision wasn’t easy. Convincing others to join the project was their first major challenge. But their vision was clear: to produce a distinctive, higher-quality coffee capable of creating better opportunities for their families.

A family inspired by the quality of their land

From the start, the Peña family understood that producing specialty coffee meant caring for every detail. They renewed their plots, introduced new varieties, trained themselves, and progressively improved their harvest, post-harvest, and fermentation processes.

They also invested in infrastructure and knowledge. Every improvement was part of a learning process aimed at better expressing the coffee’s characteristics and giving greater value to the work of those who produce it.

In 2023 they produced their first commercial lot. The coffee even reached international markets, like the United Kingdom, becoming a sign that the effort of those six people could cross the borders of San Ignacio.

From a family to a community

Over time, other producers joined the project, drawing on the privileged conditions of San José de Lourdes’ soil. The microclimates, altitude, and character of their land create an environment capable of producing coffees with distinctive profiles.

What began as a family initiative today brings together more than ten families who share the same vision: producing unique coffees and building new opportunities from their own land.

Sensory profile

Our San Ignacio coffee stands out for its soft sweetness and fruity profile. The first impression brings dried fruit and preserved cherries, alongside a sweetness reminiscent of green cane. Its citric acidity evokes a ripening orange, while the earthy body adds depth and balance to the cup.

A sweet, soft cup, with citric acidity, earthy body, and a clean finish that expresses the character of San Ignacio and the work of the families who chose to bet on quality.
